โฆ Synopsis
MRI findings. However, it is known that bilateral hyperintense abnormalities on T2 weighted images of the basal ganglia can occur in several disorders, including hypoxic-ischaemic trauma such as carbon monoxide poisoning and in Leigh disease (which occurs primarily in childhood) . The prevalence of hyperintense abnormalities in the basal ganglia on T2 weighted images of patients with proven CJD has not been studied and remains unknown. Nevertheless, in time, when more cases of CJD have been examined using MRI, the demonstration of this abnormality in the basal ganglia in patients with rapidly progressive dementia may prove to be a specific sign of this particular subacute spongiform encephalopathy.
