NOTICES OF HOOKS
-1 laclr of suc.li aids to our ac;irclr in tlie litcraturc is one of the greatest ;mnoyanccs to mi>reader.
The aut, lior will, we most, sincerely hope, take greater pains with the next edition. A far m3re scrupulous choicc in tlrc: operations to bc described is necessary ; better illustrations should be prcparcd for almost every section ; references in the text or a t the end of the volume, or both, should be give11 ; and the :rdviee of Syme that an effort should always be made to reduce tlie size of every succeeding edition of ik book may with advantage he remembered.
This hook is one of real value, but of a steadily depreciating value.
Brevity is the son1 of more than wit. Clinical Surgical Diagnosis. By Professor F. UE QUERVAIN, Berm University. 'rhird Englisli edition, translated €rom the Feventli edition by J. S ~O W M A N . M.D. Royal 8vo. With 731 illustrations and 7 plates. 1921. London : .John Bale, Sons & Danielsson IAd. 50s. net.
.I BRIEF review of this work will suffice. It is one which can be most confidently recommended to students and practitioners ; for it is unrivalled. No book on surgical diagnosis equals it in fiillness, accuracy, and insight. The discussions are admirable, the clinical acumen penetratinK and sagacious, and the illustrations are excellent. It is rather a largc book, and its price, though not high for the vast amount of material i t contains, is considerable for students of to-day. The volume should be in tlie hands of every student ; and a redurtion of its prire, if possible, would prolxrbly help t o hrinq about this result.
