✦ Synopsis


Summavy. The pentalialogenidcs of niobiuin and tantalum and some tungsten chloriclcs catalize the cyclotrimerization of acctylenic hydrocarbons to form aromatic compounds. Acetylene is converted into benzene a t atmospheric pressure and tcmperatures between -20 and 130°C. IJndcr similar conditions mcthylacetylene and but-1-yne respcctivcly yield a mixture of thc corresponding 1,2,4-and 1,3,S-substituted benzenes while with but-2-ync hexamethyl benzene is obtained. Cocyclization between acetylene and substitutcd acetylenes or diacetylene is possible; in this case monoand disubstituted benzenes or biphenyl, terphcnyl, and polyphenyls arc formed.
