✦ Synopsis

Karol Joseph Mysels passed away on October 24, 1998, in his home in La Jolla, California, after some years of declining health because of severe parkinsonism. Born in Krakow, Poland, in 1914, he got his early education in Krakow, Switzerland, and France, receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Lyon, France. He came to the United States in 1938 and received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Harvard in 1941. He worked for the Shell Development Company (1940)(1941)(1942) and was a research assistant (1941)(1942) and then a research associate (1943)(1944)(1945) at Stanford and an instructor in chemistry at New York University before he became an assistant professor at the University of Southern California in 1947. There he rose through the ranks quickly and became a full professor in 1954. He remained on this faculty until 1966, when he left academia and became an associate director of research at R. J. Reynolds Tabacco Company. In 1970 he was happy to return to California, a state he loved, and became a senior research advisor at the General Atomic Company, from which he took his formal retirement in 1979. For the next 17 years he pursued his research and scholarly interests at the University of California at San Diego and as a research consultant and was sufficiently active to author or coauthor more than 40 papers and patents.
