✦ Synopsis
Abstract
A U.S. medical devices manufacturer successfully executed a rapid lean implementation that defied conventional wisdom and then helped a Swiss sister company do the same, proving that lean can transcend cultures. The authors describe the burning platform of operational issues and what led to the decision to use a reversed sequence of pull system–product flow–waste reduction–process stabilization for the initiatives in both facilities. They also discuss the challenges that arose from cultural differences and similarities and the complex customer‐supplier relationship between the two manufacturing sites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
