A year ago, the Earth survived an attack by a race of aliens bent on their destruction called the Alva. Haven remembers watching news reports about it with her family and being glad that she lived far enough away from where the aliens had landed that it didn’t affect her very much. She’s never met an alien, never seen one aside from on TV, and she’s fine with that. She likes her normal, routine life just fine, thanks very much.

Kallel is a young warrior from the Hakkan tribe on planet Horu, a tribe that owes their continued survival to the Randoran. When the threat of the Alva proves to still be a problem for Earth, he volunteers to go to Earth and see what’s going on.

Remembering the story about how a Randoran champion had taken a human and used her to help defeat the Alva, Kallel chooses a human for himself. Haven. Only Haven doesn’t want to be chosen, doesn’t know anything about aliens, and doesn’t even seem to like him to begin with. Kallel’s going to learn that history doesn’t always repeat itself and that sometimes there’s more than one way to be a hero.
