Abstract

The K and L X‐ray absorption spectra of Al are computed on the basis of an APW band structure calculation over an energy range of 40 eV. The results are compared with experiments. The overall shapes and especially the positions of the main maxima and minima of the experimental spectra are well reproduced by the theory. An appreciable lifetime broadening for the excited electrons is needed to smear out the structures to the extent found in the experiments. Discrepancies in the relative magnitudes of the spectral features between theory and experiment suggest that the core hole screening effect in the final state is primarily to scale the intensities in an energy dependent manner.
