Una serie de asesinatos atormentan a un pequeño pueblo medieval. Las víctimas comparten una cosa en común, uno de los dedos de sus manos ha sido cortado y está desaparecido. Didacus, un investigador que trabaja para la Santa Inquisición, quiere encontrar al responsible basándose en evidencias mientras que el Padre Nikolai, un respetado líder en el pueblo, pretende mantener el control de la población a través del miedo y demostraciones de poder.
