Special Issue on Computer-aided ship design: Some recent results and steps ahead in theory, methodology and practice Dedicated to Professor Horst Nowacki on the occasion of his 75th birthday Modern Computer-Aided Ship Design (CASD) adopts a systemic approach, considering the ship as a complex system that integrates a variety of subsystems. These subsystems provide services required for the ship itself, such as power generation for ship propulsion, and services related to the ship's function, e.g., provision of cargo or passenger spaces. The major challenge consists in developing robust and efficient methodologies for optimizing these subsystems and the whole system (the ship) in a life-cycle operational context. The optimization problems involve: (a) continuous as well as discrete variables, (b) constraints of geometric, physical and functional origin, and (c) measures of merit that reflect the interests of the various ship-design stake holders. These stakeholders are numerous -ship owners/operators need to minimize required freight rate, shipbuilders want to minimize ship's structural weight, classification societies wish to maximize safety of passengers/crew and minimize mainengine emissions, cargo owners/forwarders want to minimize environmental impact in case of accidents, port operators require minimum wave-wash, and so on.

To meet these requirements, modern CASD combines a strong tradition of ship design with modern information technology (IT)
