✦ Synopsis
General Motors Corps's vision for tomorrow's auto plant lies in Resende,
Brazil, a remote village 100 miles south of Rio de Janeiro. But crowning the new factory, due to open in November, will be Volkswagen A G s logo instead of GMs. How one of GM's most-advanced manufacturing concepts wound up a reality at V W is a major component in the racketeering lawsuit G m filed Thursday against the German automaker and several of its top executives. GM accused VW of illegally copying its plans for a futuristic plant similar to the one VW is building to produce buses in Latin America. The German automaker did that by convincing former GM purchasing chief J. Ignacio Lopez de Arriortua to bring the concept with him when he defected in March 1993.
"Plant X Concept Puts Lopez on the Spot," The Detroit News, March 10, 1996 He cared not a whit about long-standing relationships with GM suppliers, even when those suppliers were GM subsidiaries. He put those wanting to do business with GM through relentless rounds of bidding, then demanded that the survivors hit even lower marks. When they squawked that they couldn't meet his impossible targets, L6pez sent teams of efficiency experts to their plants to teach them how to save steps in the manufacturing process. Within General Motors, the brilliant cost cutter was something of a cult leader. He called his three dozen or so top disciples "Warriors;" they ate a "Warrior diet" (fiesh fruits were in; meats and coffee were out)
