✦ Synopsis

In 1946, Dr.

Hollander became chief of the arthritis section at the University of Pennsylvania. During his ϳ30 years in this position he trained a number of leading rheumatologists and performed his seminal work on intraarticular depot steroid injections. Along with his fellow, Dr. Daniel McCarty, he described the role of monosodium urate crystals in gout, and of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate in pseudogout, which revolutionized the use of synovial fluid analysis for diagnosis. He also did important original work on the roles of climate, joint temperature, and joint fluid. He was Professor of Medicine from 1962 until his retirement in 1987.

Dr. Hollander was President of the American Rheumatism Association (now the American College of Rheumatology) in 1961-62. In 1972, he was named a Master by the American College of Physicians, and in 1987, a Master of the American College of Rheumatology. In addition, the American College of Rheumatology awarded him its highest honor, the Gold Medal, in 1991. In 1948, he helped found the Arthritis Foundation, which awarded him its Distinguished Service Award 4 times and its Charles B. Harding Award in 1982. He also helped found the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, which established an award in his name in 1995. In 1998, he was again recognized by the national Arthritis Foundation as one of 50 nationwide Heroes Overcoming Arthritis. In 1990, the Philadelphia County Medical Society awarded him the Strittmatter Award, its highest honor. Donations from his grateful patients led to an endowed chair in his name established at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where Dr. Hollander had served as Chief of Pediatric Rheumatology for 30 years; in 1999, Dr. Terri Finkel became the first chairholder.

After Dr. Bernard Comroe's untimely death, Dr. Hollander became the editor of Arthritis and Allied Conditions. Over five editions from 1947 until 1972, he evolved this key text into a multiauthored book covering numerous topics. He
