## Abstract We consider the measures of jointness proposed by Doppelhofer and Weeks (2009) and Strachan (2009) in the context of variable selection. Using the general criteria suggested in Ley and Steel (2007), we identify some shortcomings of these measures, which are illustrated with empirically

โฆ Synopsis
Abstract
This paper introduces a new measure of dependence or jointness among explanatory variables. Jointness is based on the joint posterior distribution of variables over the model space, thereby taking model uncertainty into account. By looking beyond marginal measures of variable importance, jointness reveals generally unknown forms of dependence. Positive jointness implies that regressors are complements, representing distinct but mutually reinforcing effects. Negative jointness implies that explanatory variables are substitutes and capture similar underlying effects. In a crossโcountry dataset we show that jointness among 67 determinants of growth is important, affecting inference and informing economic policy. Copyright ยฉ 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

## Abstract This comment contrasts the jointness statistics proposed by Doppelhofer and Weeks (2009) with alternatives proposed by Strachan (2009) and Ley and Steel (2007). In contrast to the alternatives, our jointness statistic constitutes a formal test for dependence over the joint posterior dis
## Abstract In Africa, research concerning the social determinants of poor nutritional status has typically focused on children under 5 years of age and has used defined categorical boundaries based on international reference standards. In this article, stunting and wasting of 1,157 Malian adolesce
In this paper, the determinants of growth of aggregate health expenditures are investigated. The study departs from previous literature in that it looks at differences across countries in growth (and not levels) of health care expenditures. Estimation is made for 24 OECD countries.
