✦ Synopsis
DR. KIPLING died suddenly on July 18, 1965 while attending a Conference of the Industrial Union of Pure and -4pplied Chemistry in Moscow. Born in London in 1921 and educated at University College in Oxford, where in 1939 he was Plumptre Exhibitioner and State Scholar, he gained his D.Phil. under Professor C. Hinshelwood as a result of his war-time work on adsorption of gases on charcoal. After a brief period in the soap and oil industry, Dr. Kipling came to the University College of Hull in 1948 and remained associated with this school, which later became University of Hull, for the rest of his life. He was twice Sub-Dean of the Facultv of Science and served in 196213 as Acting Head of the Chemistry Department.
Dr. Kipling gradually built up at Hull two active research groups which reflected his major fields of interest in his later years. One group was engaged primarily on studies of adsorption on carbon surfaces from solution and from the gas phase, and the second one on carbonization and graphitization of high polymers and the surface properties of the carbons so produced. The result of this work was some 60 contributions to learned journals and a standard research monograph on -4dsorption of Non-Electrolytes from Solution. Dr. Kipling's interests were broad; he was an excellent teacher and was regarded by all who came under his influence with admiration and affection. The international "Carbon Community" will sorely miss him.
