β¦ Synopsis
The design of optical fiber data communication systems requires very low error rates (<10 Γ 10 -15 ) over moderate distances (<100 km); this leads to unique requirements for datacom optical fiber repeaters. Considerably more timing jitter can be tolerated in such links as compared with conventional telecommunication repeater designs. This provides an opportunity to reduce costs by relaxing the repeater design, provided that the performance is well understood so that errors are still avoided. A design approach, a jitter measurement technique, and results are reported for characterization of datacom repeaters, and the results are compared with existing models of timing jitter in cascaded repeaters. Results apply to any repeater design which is characterized by a second-order transfer function; the method is demonstrated for the IBM 9036 remote channel extender on an enterprise system connection link.
