Het hele dorp beschouwt de Broadhursts als een fatsoenlijke mijnwerkersfamilie. Jinny Broadhurst weet wel beter. Alleen haar trots en kracht zorgen ervoor dat het gezin bijeen blijft en dat angst en haat binnenshuis blijven. Jack, haar jongste zoon, is getrouwd met een feeks die de familie terroriseert en Lottie, Jinny’s lichtzinnige zuster, is niet helemaal normaal.
