En la retorcida y divertidísima visión de Max Barry sobre el futuro próximo, el mundo está en manos de enormes empresas americanas (excepto unas pocas ilusas que se niegan a entrar en el juego, como las francesas); los impuestos son ilegales, los empleados toman sus apellidos de las empresas para las que trabajan; la Policía y la Asociación Nacional del Rifle (ANR) son empresas de seguridad con las que se comercia públicamente; el Gobierno sólo investiga delitos si puede pasarle la factura a un determinado ciudadano. ¡Es el paraíso del libre mercado!
Hack Nike es un empleado de segunda a quien no se le da demasiado bien negociar su salario. Así que cuando John Nike y John Nike, ejecutivos de la tierra prometida del marketing, le ofrecen un contrato, lo firma sin leerlo. Desgraciadamente, el nuevo contrato de Hack le obliga a cometer asesinatos con el fin de dar publicidad a unas nuevas zapatillas Nike de 2500 dólares el par. Asustado, Hack va a la Policía, que entiende que lo que les está pidiendo es una subcontrata, y dan en arriendo el trabajo a la ANR.
Muy pronto, Hack se ve perseguido por Jennifer Gobierno. Jennifer es una mamá estresada, vigilante del mundo empresarial y agente gubernamental que lleva un código de barras tatuado bajo su ojo. Su principal objetivo es cazar a John Nike (el jefe del otro John Nike). En un mundo en el que el lugar que uno ocupa en el trabajo es vital, donde la posesión más preciada es una tarjeta de crédito de platino y el eslogan publicitario da paso a la artillería por la lucha de mercados, Jennifer Gobierno es quien protege los intereses del consumidor, el perro guardián del consumo procedente del infierno.
