The author, who worked a t the Torry and the White Fish Authority and as a consultant to the FAO, reviews the techno-economic considerations and outlines the factors affecting technical development of marine fisheries, the place of science, and the management of research in behalf of the fishing industry. He concludes that, because man has virtually no control over the oceans, the industry must maintain a capability of adapting t o change. Many examples are taken from fisheries developed in tropical countries.

All these aspects are reviewed in detail by Dr. MASON, who works a t the Shellfish Section of the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen. He also compiled the bibliography.
