Vijftiende deel in de thrillerserie over Jack Reacher, avonturier en voormalig agent van de Amerikaanse militaire politie. Een door de gebeurtenissen in β61 uurβ nogal gehavende Reacher raakt op doorreis naar Virginia in een motel in een afgelegen gehucht in Nebraska verzeild. Hij helpt een dronken dokter een door haar man mishandelde vrouw op te lappen. De vrouw wordt stelselmatig mishandeld en Reacher vraagt zich af waarom er niemand ingrijpt en iedereen zo bang is voor haar man Seth Duncan. Hij besluit de man op te zoeken en is al gauw tot zijn nek toe verwikkeld in lokale problemen waarin de mannen uit de Duncan-familie, die een transportbedrijf runnen en de hele omgeving tiranniseren, een centrale rol spelen. Spannende, sfeervolle en keiharde actiethriller waarin stijl, dialogen, plot en karakterisering zoals altijd op hoog niveau staan.
