As the editors note in their preface to Volume 8, rapid progress has been made in all branches of marine chemistry since &he publication of the previous volumes. FRANK J. MILLERO'S contribution deals with the influence of pressure on chemical processes in the sea. Only few direct determinations of its effect on ionic equilibria in sea water have been made. MILLERO reviews the methods and emphasizes the need for more studies to elucidate the transformations that occur a t the sediment-water interface in deep oceans.
