โฆ Synopsis
J integral calculations made from any of the estimation formulas [l,2] require an area under a load displacement record, as a measure of the work done on the specimen.
For the compact specimen, this area is a measure of work only when the displacement is measured along the load line. For most JIc tests conducted by the proposed ASTM procedure[3], measurement of load line displacement is simple and routine. However for some JIc tests conducted on compact specimens, a load line measurement of displacement is either very difficult or impossible.
Examples include specimens loaded dynamically, very small specimens, and specimens machined prior to the development of the present JIc test procedure (e.g., nuclear surveillance specimens).
