By 1951
, changing economic and social conditions had brought the older Proceedings of the Liverpool Geological Society and the Proceedings of the Manchester Geological Association into a state of decline. At about this time, also, the science ofgeology was rapidly expanding as geophysics, geochemistry, palaeoecology and sedimentology were acquiring more significance. It was under these circumstances that Harper became editor.
Since then, the "Liverpool and Manchester Geological Journal" has appeared each year and, by 1961, the number and standard of its papers had improved so much that the Journal had become a publication of national importance. Harper then conceived the idea of a radical revision of the format; so in 1962, the Journal appeared in a larger size with new typography and an attractive cover. Then in 1964, to accord with the Journal's new status, it was renamed the "Geological Journal". The changes in style were made in advance of many other British journals and the credit for the initiation and accomplishment of these changes goes entirely to Harper.
