✦ Synopsis

THIS ESSAY reviews the nature and uses of statistical data on cancer with special emphasis on developing countries. Cancer is by no means confined to populations with a Western life-style; it is a major health problem in all areas of the world. 1 All countries are therefore likely to have to devote some of their health care resources to the control of cancer. The development of health care programs requires statistical data to assess the size and nature of the problem at the least, and, if possible, to evaluate the effectiveness of the control strategies employed. 2
