✦ Synopsis
This article reports findings from a case study carried out at a Canadian medium-security women's correctional institution. A total of twenty-seven respondents, including inmates, correctional officers, treatment providers, and administrators, were interviewed in 1999. Current conditions (economy of scale, prison location, facility design, conditional sentencing and trans-institutionalization, correctional officer work orientations) affecting the effectiveness of rehabilitation were identified and examined with an eye to assessing how well lessons of the past were mastered. The article concludes with some observations on the future of women's rehabilitation.
