An efficient iterative approach for synthesis of thin-film filters is proposed and applied to the design of antireflection coatings. The method is based on the direct and inverse scattering transform. Design criteria in the two domains (the spatial domain and the spectral domain) are specified, and by transforming back and forth between the two domains, forcing the criteria to be fulfilled, the thin film structure is obtained after some iterations.
