โœฆ Synopsis

and FCE, owns a planar, reduced-temperature solid oxide fuel cell technology. It is also the lead subcontractor in the team headed by FCE that was awarded a 10-year, $139m SECA contract by the DOE in April [FCB, June].

The equity investment, representing 15.8% of Versa's shares, provides FCE with greater input and a vested ownership interest in the development of the SOFC technology for the SECA project. FCE believes this will enhance its current MCFC development efforts, and enable it to seize future commercialization opportunities in smaller, high-temperature fuel cell products.

The investment in Versa closely follows the news of FCE's plans to acquire Canadian SOFC company Global Thermoelectric [FCB, September]. Together these moves signal the company's long-term intent to develop and market SOFC products alongside its molten carbonate Direct FuelCell ยฎ products.
