Abstract

While leaders of the commercial biotechnology industry are impressed with the numbers and quality of science graduates, they complain that they must invest time to further train them about basic aspects of this highly regulated work environment. The addition of a small number of recommended courses would augment the students' preparation for and participation in commercial research and development (R&D). These courses include a basic understanding of the R&D process and the laws and regulations that impact this process, such as Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs). Finally it is suggested that the most likely and capable teachers of these principles are working in the biotechnology industry, and it will involve active collaboration between academia and industry to best prepare graduates for success in biotechnology R&D.
