✦ Synopsis

In a masterly work of historical scholarship Michael Cohen brings to life the tangled international diplomacy, mainly between Great Britain and the United States, which accompanied the last years of the Palestine Mandate and the birth of Israel. The story itself is not so different in its general lines from that told in the earlier books of J. C. Hurewitz, Christopher Sykes and others, but Cohen has found much new material in recently opened archives in London, Washington and Israel. He concedes that his treatment of the Arab side is limited, but finds that justified by the relatively marginal role played by the Arabs in these events.
