✦ Synopsis

The variation of the potential radius for the isotopes of an element is studied based on the symmetry dependence of the potential well depth. The potential parameters of a non-local Woods-Saxon potential are determined by fitting to the experimental proton separation energies. It is shown that the assumption of the validity of A~ dependence for the potential radius leads to a symmetry term of the wrong sign. An order of the magnitude estimate of the symmetry term is sufficient to establish the anomalous isotope shift of the proton potential radius. Results of our calculations for Ti and Xe isotopes are presented as illustrations. The study also leads to some guidelines for proper representation and determination of the symmetry term in the potentials.
