Pyrolysis of dibenzyl ether (I3BE) in tetralin-d, 2 allowed discrimination between possible free radical and concerted reaction mechanisms. Pyrolysis product spectra contained both cr-deuteriotoluene and perprotiotoluene, relative fractions of which were determined, by complementary 'H and '3C n.m.r. analyses, to vary
