✦ Synopsis
This paper describes the isolation and the purification Of'Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin. The toxin was produced by the E. coli strain Fl 1 (PI 55) of porcine origin. It was purified to homogeneity by successive operations of desalting on XAD-2 resin, gel filtration on Bio-Gel P4, and high-pressure liquid chromatography on cyanopropyl and octadecylsilane columns. After chemical characterization by quantitative amino acid analysis and determination of its sequence, the heat-stable enterotoxin was shown to be a monomeric octadecapeptide with the following primary structure: H
