✦ Synopsis

Although a number of studies have been carried out on the lipid content and profile of epidermis, little attention has been focused on a particular group of acidic glycosphingolipids, the gangliosides. In this study gangliosides were isolated from normal human tissue: breast, abdomen, and leg. Epidermis was removed, gangliosides were isolated, sialic acid content was quantified by gas-liquid chromatography, and individual species were analyzed using thin-layer chromatography. Ganglioside content was similar for epidermis from abdomen and leg, but was higher in breast. Epidermal individual gangliosides, however, differed markedly from region to region. Epidermis from leg contained mostly GM3 whereas epidermis from breast and abdomen contained GD3 in addition to more complex homologues. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.

A series of major and minor ganglioside species were isolated from a single human adult brain and analyzed for their lipophlic composition. ## Abstract Epidermal material from a variety of reptilian species, avian and mammalian scales have been examined by standard histological and x‐ray diffraction techniques. It has been found that morphologic and/or tinctorial properties are not good criteria for the identification of specific fibro
