The capsular polysaccharide of Klebsiella K33 was subjected to Smith degradation, and an oligosaccharide-alditol, R, 0.8. was isolated. The purified oligosaccharide-alditol was characterized by sugar and methylation analyses, and by mass spectrometry as the permethylated derivative, and found to have the following structure.
