✦ Synopsis

The theory of the isokinetic relationship (IKR, sometimes referred to as compensation effect) and its connection to generalised linear free energy relationships and its application to systems exhibiting spin-crossover both in solid state and in solution is reviewed. A theoretical background to the occurrence of the IKR is given in analogy to chemical reactions without spin-state transformations. Applications of the relationships are suggested on the basis of detecting changes in reaction pathways of the spin-state changes within a given series of reactions.
