β¦ Synopsis
The argument consensus gentium for the existence of God(s) has a long and venerable history. Perhaps the first explicit statement of this argument in the philosophy of the West is to be found in Plato's Laws, X, 886, where Cleinias cites "the fact that all HeUenes and barbarians believe in them" as one way of proving the existence of the Gods, the order of the universe being the other.
John Stuart Mill stated well the need to consider seriously the argument from consent when he wrote:
