In a world where many things are uncertain and contested, there are two issues that seem to be rather less controversial. The first is that environmental issues have a higher profile in political and social circles than ever before, and the second is that the UK is a media-saturated society, with citizen-consumers bombarded by images and texts at every turn. It is well documented that we live in an 'information society' (Castells, 1998) where the knowledge economy and global communications provide experiences-virtual and real-of environments well beyond our own backyard.
