✦ Synopsis

German students are brought up in the belief that anything which is easy enough for them to understand is dubious and probably unscientific. In writing a textbook on social psychology Martin Irle thus had the difficult task to present social' psychology, which basically consists of a collection of very simple, sometimes even simpleminded hypotheses, in such a way that the reader would only understand it after a great deal of rereading. He succeeded admirably. Even this reviewer cannot pretend to have understood everything presented over the fivehundred-odd pages on first reading.
