✦ Synopsis

a good species ?

I n his notable work, TILLYARD (1921) named the puzzling "Himalayan larva" Epiophlebia luidlawi representing another relict species of the suborder Anisozygoptera in recent age. Based mainly upon the affinities seen in wing venation, he recognized it to be congeneric with the Japanese kin. For the specific distinction the remoteness of the habitats was the main reason. I n a later year, after the larva of Japanese Epiophlebia superstes had been found, Dr. FURUKAWA (1934) made a comparison between penultimate instar nymphs of both species. ASARINA (1954) reexamined the same problem but did not accept the differenciating characters stated by FKJRUKAWA to be conclusive, and was of the opinion that "both species are very closely related."

I n the spring of 1958, the author had an opportunity to visit Darjeeling area, and succeeded to rediscover the nymphs of the possible Himalayan species presumably from the same brook where KEMP obtained the single type specimen just forty years ago. Jn the following pages is given a comparison of the two species in question.
