โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

An ultrahighโ€molecularโ€weight polyethylene material covering a range of crystallinity from 42 to 79% increased in calorimetric crystallinity as a result of chain scission following ionizing irradiation. Carbonyl was formed by a diffusionโ€limited reaction of oxygen with longโ€lived free radicals. Transโ€vinylene production was linear with radiation dose and was highest for the sample of highest crystallinity but was not sensitive to environment.

## Abstract The interaction between oxidation and crosslinking in gammaโ€irradiated ultrahigh molecularโ€weight polyethylene with and without artificial aging was studied. The effect of the atmosphere during irradiation (air vs. low oxygen) occurred primarily within about 0.5 mm of the surface, that
