Abstract

Measurements of crosslinking, unsaturation, and hydrogen evolution following electron bombardment are similar for bulk polyethylene and fast‐filtered single crystals. Slow‐filtered single crystals evidence a unique irradiation behavior. It is suggested that irradiation‐induced crosslinking is preferentially between the layers of polyethylene single crystals if the lamellae are in close contact. Following slow filtration the lamellae are separated while fast filtration of single crystal preparations brings the lamellae into contact. Moreover, it is possible that the bulk polymer is composed of folded molecules in compacted lamellae.
