✦ Synopsis

“The plot becomes more unnerving as it progresses, and an impressive twist leads to a lengthy final act featuring Rosica at her most ferocious...Cory’s concise prose establishes a consistent pace that never wavers, and even her descriptions of architecture are exhilarating.” The KIRKUS REVIEW

During a robbery, a bank guard is shot. The license of the getaway car is traced to Architect Iris Reid. When the police arrest Iris and show her security footage of the robbery, she sees her own face looking back.

Scrambling to defend herself against an airtight case, Iris discovers that her mail's been diverted to an abandoned apartment in the next town. She's able to find a clue there that allows her to pick up her doppelganger’s trail.

But someone is watching her every move.

Doppellgänger, the third Iris Reid mystery from real-life architect Susan Cory, is a psychological thriller about obsession, identity and what it means to have parts of your life stripped away.

This third installment in the Iris Reid mystery series introduces Rosica, Iris’s beautiful but treacherous doppelganger, a sinister creature guaranteed to send a shiver down the reader’s spine.
P. M. Steffen, best-selling author of The Profiler’s Daughter and Killing Ulysses

A clever thriller with plenty of suspense as architect Iris Reid and her doppellganger embark on a collision course that will keep you reading til the last page. JJ Shelley, author of Hot Water **

Review

The KIRKUS REVIEW: "In Cory's (Facade, 2016, etc.) latest series thriller, Boston architect and amateur sleuth Iris Reid faces off against an identity thief who becomes a dangerous stalker. Although Iris makes her living in architecture, she's previously worked with the police on murder and kidnapping cases. But her latest is her toughest one yet, as cops arrest her for an armed bank robbery that left a guard in critical condition. Security-camera footage from a car rental service shows someone, who certainly looks like her, renting the getaway car. Iris gets out on bail, but authorities don't seem to buy her claim that her identity was stolen. Readers know that the thief is a woman named Rosica Bakalov, who later pushes her luck by looting Iris' savings account and severely damaging her credit. Iris begins her search for Rosica by visiting an apartment that the thief rented in Iris' name. Rosica becomes nervous when she realizes that her pursuer is getting close, but her anxiety soon turns into resentment. She believes that Iris has the life that she should have--including a handsome, successful chef boyfriend, Luc Cormier, whose new restaurant Iris is renovating. So the thief begins to shadow her victim, and her subtle attempts to torment the architect become more overt and increasingly hazardous. By introducing the character of Rosica early, Cory forgoes mystery in favor of suspense. She effectively provides insight into the villain's mind, revealing it to be unstable and unpredictable. She also deftly establishes Iris as a woman who's worried about her professional reputation, and introduces a subplot about a yoga instructor who may be a bit too hands-on with Luc. Meanwhile, the plot becomes more unnerving as it progresses, and an impressive twist leads to a lengthy final act featuring Rosica at her most ferocious...Cory's concise prose establishes a consistent pace that never wavers, and even her descriptions of architecture are exhilarating. An engagingly nerve-wracking tale with gradually escalating suspense." About the Author

I live in Cambridge, Massachusetts with my architect husband and bossy rescue dog. Like my sleuth, I am a residential architect practicing out of a turreted office. Also, like Iris Reid, I have a brown belt in karate. I grew up in New Jersey devouring mysteries. I loved seeing order restored by ingenious sleuths. But the visual arts were my medium of expression. As an Art major at Dartmouth, I imagined that designing buildings was just a larger-scaled version of creating sculpture. I soon discovered the many differences. At graduate school at Harvard's G.S.D., I found a setting-insecurities and egos riding a runaway train of Design Obsession- just ripe for murder. Conundrum, Facade and Doppelgänger are odes to my profession and all the deviously clever practitioners within it. I'm hard at work on Book 4 in the series in which Iris Reid will continue to uncover the architecture of evil in her world.
