✦ Synopsis

IRIS is a three-year experiment in the introduction of computers and, in particular, computer science into Italian schools by using ad hoc self-consistent didactic modules within already-existing courses. The modules have been designed so as to be easily adaptable to several contexts and some of them aim at the introduction of computer science concepts in various disciplines without the use of the computer. This is done both to see the effect of such an introduction and to cater for those schools not having computers or enough of appropriate kind. About 35 modules produced by about 25 authors have been experimented with, sharing only a conmaon framework but using different approaches. About 5000 pupils from elementary to senior secondary schools have been involved and the first results obtained so far are outlined.
