✦ Synopsis

UV-visible fluorescence from solid argon containing 1% or "C"O is observed upon irradiation hy n color-ccn~~ laser whose frequency is coincident with the lirst overtone absorption hand or CO. This emission consisls or an imsnse complex syswm bcwcen 650 and 800 nm and a weaker single progression rxlrnding from 310 lo 640 nm. Both syslems are assigned IO eleclronic transilions of moleculnr oxygen. Inrrared emission speara indicale thal high-lying vibraional kvels~o~ CO (up IO u = 30) are populaled by anharmonic V-V pumping. Subsequent smission rrom C%, and b'': SKIKS or O2 suggests-that vibnlional-l~rlscrronic energy ~ranskr occurs. Vibrnrionally unrslnned rmission rrom Ihs singIrl s~alc ol oxygen indicaks rhal the vibralional relaxation or Oz(b''l ) in Ar is slow.

We observe UV fluorescence from a gas ccl1 contammg NO and Ar, when uradlated by a CO laser hne, comcldent wth an NO fundamental. The power dcnslty generated cw by the CO laser does not exceed I k\V/cm\* m the focal area. It IS suggested that V-V pumpmg 1s responable for cwltmg the NO X 'IT up to u
