β¦ Synopsis
The empirical relatiomhip ZE a l/n, between the ionization energy (ZE) and molecular size (as represented by the number of atoms, n) in homologous series of organic compounds has been confirmed for nalkaoes, alkyl halides, cyclic ethers and alkyl-substituted cycloalkanes. For each series, the plot of ZE vs. I/# produces a line of characteristic slope. The only exception is the cycloalkaws themselves, whose Z E values (from C, to C,) are closely similar.
The possible relationsbip between the ZE, the polarizability of the molecules and the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital is briefly disclrssed.
