Abstract
New water soluble polyelectrolytes were prepared by quaternizing addition polymerization of 1,4‐bis(chloroacetyl)piperazine (1) with N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylhexamethylenediamine (2), 1,4‐dimethylpiperazine (3), 1,4‐diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane (4), and N,N‐dimethyl‐(4‐dimethylaminomethyl)benzylamine (5). DMF, DMF/water, and water were used as reaction media. The polymer synthesized from 1 and 2 in DMF/water (4:1) showed a very high molecular weight and an intrinsic viscosity of 37ml/g, which is the highest value found for such compounds so far.
