✦ Synopsis
This publication describes how the use of ion-selective electrodes (and also glass electrodes) has given rise to misinterpretation of the emergence of electrode potential over the years. It has been assumed that electrode potential is connected with ion transport through a membrane. It is now shown that the potential is established on the surface of the electrode by the energy giving the charge separation with the chemical potential of the salt, a component of which establishes chemisorption with a component of the membrane.
