✦ Synopsis
Ion exchange of alkali metals in M x VOPO 4 ' yH 2 O (M ؍ H, Na, K, Rb, Cs) is reported. The role of valence, size, and a7nity of the cations in the exchange process is discussed. The interlayer distance in the H 1+x K x VOPO ' yH 2 O system is discussed in terms of 5nite layer rigidity theory. Di4erent behavior is observed for K x Na 1+x VOPO 4 ' yH 2 O dependening on the starting compound used. When potassium in KVOPO 4 ' H O is exchanged for Na ؉ , one phase compound is formed. In contrast, K x Na 1+x VOPO 4 ' yH O formed from NaVOPO ' H O and K ؉ is a multiphase system. Ion exchange does not proceed when exchanging ions di4er distinctly from each other in size, e.g., sodium and cesium.
