โฆ Synopsis
undertaken. Civil proceedings, child protection conferences, mental health legislation, probation hostels, pre-sentence reports, sentencing, sex offender treatment programmes and the Sex Offenders Act 1997 are outlined.
The remaining eight chapters focus on how to assess specific areas of functioning in sexual abusers including their knowledge and attitudes, distorted thinking, sexual arousal and fantasy, empathy, self-esteem, intimacy, alcohol and drug use. The final chapter deals with risk assessment.
The book is concise and written in clear English. It is entirely readable and the information contained is relevant and up to date. I would agree with the authors that it could be used by all types of professional to provide a good introduction to the subject, providing that the reader is prepared to supplement the abbreviated text by reading more widely. It could also be used as an aide memoire.
