✦ Synopsis

In a large aircraft gas turbine, around 10% of the core airflow bypasses the high pressure turbine nozzle guide vanes. Half of this cools the blade and vane, and half is used for disc cooling and rim senllng -which latter half accounts for a 5% drain on fuel consnmption. Commercial pressure therefore is strong to enhance rim sealing and disc cooling efficiency without impacting on safety. This article describes work ongoing at the University of Sussex, UK, to address the issue.

## Abstract The development of abradeable gas turbine seals for higher temperature duties has been the target of an EU‐funded R&D project, ADSEALS, with the aim of moving towards seals that can withstand surface temperatures as high as ∼ 1100Β°C for periods of at least 24,000 h. An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of some geometric parameters of runners and nozzles (e.g., diameter ratio and throat width ratio) on the efficiency in the cross-flow turbines, by varying of ratio of inner-to-outer diameters of runners and gate openings of two differe
