✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The facile acid‐catalysed dehydration of substituted β‐ionols, e.g. β‐C~15~‐ and β‐C~20~‐hydroxy esters, gives a substantial yield of the R (= retro) compounds and not of the corresponding β‐ionylidene compounds. This is correlated with the different properties of these molecules: almost planar configuration of R‐compounds vs. distorted β‐ionylidene derivatives.

## Abstract An examination has been made of the significance of several vitamin factors in the production of bracken ‘poisoning’ in ruminants. Bracken feeding led to a rapid cessation of urinary vitamin‐B1 excretion but this was not associated with any consistent increase in pyruvic acid excretion
