β¦ Synopsis
Recently we have tried to synthesize cyclobutadienes stabilized by steric hindrance due to bulky substituents (2,3). In this paper we report our attempts to obtain benzocyolobutadienes bearing one or two tM.-butyl groups grafted on the four-membered ring. By treatment of trans-1.2-dibromo-benzocyclobutene (&) with tert.-butyl-magnesium chloride,l-ta. -butyl-benzocyclobutene (2) (4), b.p. 600/2 mm (28%), together with tm-1,2-di-ta.-butyl-benzocyclobutene (L), b.p. 900/2 mm (6.5%) Were obtained.
